5 Steps to Proper Detoxing

With so much discussion about the importance of detoxing, things can get pretty confusing. There are so many detox programs out there so you may not know which one to follow. It’s important for you to choose the one that works best for you – but make sure that the detox program that you choose has these five components:

My friend was feeling really sluggish and I suggested that she go on a 5-day detox. At first, she complained of a recurring headache but after two days, she called to tell me how fabulous she felt. She said that her sleeping was better, she had more energy, and she even swore that her memory was improving. I believe her because I experienced similar great results when I started detoxing several years ago.

Detoxing is a way to help your body eliminate all of those toxins that have built up from the increasing amounts of environmental pollutants such as pesticides in our food, air pollutions, household cleaners, and excessive stress, which has also been shown to release unwanted toxins in our body. Not detoxing can actually be harmful so it’s really important to do a detoxing regimen at least 1-2 times per year. Here are five things that should be in any good detox program.

Resting your organs

Your body has been busy chewing and digesting food for the majority of the year. When you begin your detox program, you’ll want to give your digestive system a rest. This is why I recommend beginning your fast with a juice cleanse. For the first 2 days, try juicing your fresh fruits and vegetables so that your digestive system has a chance to rest and rejuvenate.

Cleansing the colon and kidneys

You’ll also want to cleanse your colon and kidneys to remove any blockages. Since these two organs are essential for proper elimination, if there are blockages. you could end up accumulating even more toxins when you detox because the toxins that are released have nowhere to go. Drinking plenty of water and eating fiber-rich foods such as brown rice, beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, and seaweed will help remove blockages. Many people also use supplements to help with cleansing. Herbal formulas are really good for cleansing the kidneys while colon hydrotherapy, enemas, and Epsom salt cleanses are all known to be excellent colon cleansers.

Eliminating toxins through the intestines, colon, and skin

Promote the elimination of toxins by drinking plenty of water and fresh juice as well as eating vegetables, both raw and cooked. You might want to go to the sauna or take hot showers to help eliminate toxins through your skin, as well. And try to maintain positive emotions (use stress reduction techniques as necessary) because stress is known to create toxins in the body.

Exercise

Get in regular exercise. Increased blood circulation helps toxins to be released from muscles so that they can be eliminated. One of my friends swears by yoga and martial arts as great cleansing exercises.

Refueling your body with healthy nutrients

As your detox regimen comes to a close, you want to reintroduce healthy nutrients. In fact, eating healthy should be a part of your regular lifestyle as this will keep down the amount of toxins in your body. Eat organic food as often as you can. Eliminate excessive caffeine, sugar, and alcohol. Continue to eat vegetables and your meat should be seafood, poultry, and lean cuts of beef. When you eat healthy all year round, then there's less amount of toxins in your body overall.

Keep in mind that when you first start a detox program, it may feel a little uncomfortable at first as all of the toxins are brought to the surface to be flushed out. However, if you stick with it, I’m sure that after a few days, you’ll be glad that you did!
